Unit-1: Airframe Structural Design Pdf Notes
Structural design process, planning, design, construction, philosophy of designing, principal structural components of aircraft, wings, empennage, landing gear, the powerplant, structural integrity and failure, stiffness, service life, aerodynamic characteristics, load analysis, flight loads, maneuver loads, a structural design project may be divided into three phases, i.e. Planning, design and construction.
Unit-2: Airframe Structural Design Pdf Notes
Wing loads, Span-wise air load distribution, Fuselage loads, Aluminum alloys, Titanium, Plastics, Composite materials,Damage Tolerance, The term damage tolerance as known today was traced during 15th century and Leonardo Da Vinci’s notebook on the design of flying machines.
Unit-3: Airframe Structural Design Pdf Notes
Wing box, Wing layout,Wing Configuration, Wing Structure, Wing Spars ,Wing Ribs, Wing Skin, Nacelles Nacelles, FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES, A wing is a type of fin with a surface that produces aerodynamic forces facilitating movement through air and other gases, or water and other liquids. As such, wings have an airfoil shape, a streamlined cross-sectional shape producing lift.
Unit-4: Airframe Structural Design Pdf Notes
DESIGN OF FUSELAGE, LANDING GEAR, ENGINE MOUNTS Truss Type, Monocoque Type, Empennage, Landing Gear, Tail Wheel Gear Configuration, Tricycle Gear, The fuselage is the main structure or body of the fixed-wing aircraft. It provides space for cargo, controls, accessories, passengers, and other equipment. In single-engine aircraft, the fuselage houses the power-plant.
Unit-5: Airframe Structural Design Pdf Notes
FATIGUE LIFE, DAMAGE TOLERANCE, FAIL-SAFE DESIGN, WEIGHT CONTROL AND BALANCE,Common failure modes,Damage Tolerance and Allowable Design & Limit Analysis,Damage Tolerance and Allowable Design Limit Analysis,Damage Tolerance,Allowable Damage Limit (ADL),Fatigue Life Estimation Procedures For the Endurance of a Cardiac Valve Prosthesis: Stress/Life and Damage-Tolerant Analyses.
Q1: What is Airframe structural design?
A1: As a branch of structural mechanics, the field of aerospace structures includes topics such as instability, stress, failure, deformation. These are influenced by the physical and engineering properties of materials. These are also influenced by the geometric attributes and boundary conditions of the structural system. It is a knowledge of structural design methods and an understanding of the load paths are essential to advancement in nearly all phases of airframe engineering.
Q2: What are the protection against spalling?
A2: Acceptable measures include:
1.An applied finish by hand pr spray of plaster, vermiculite, etc
2.A false ceiling as a fire barrier
3.The use of lightweight aggregates
4.The use of sacrificial tensile steel
Q3: How detailing should be done?
A3: Detailing of the structure should be such as to implement the design assumptions for the changes during a fire in the distribution of load and the characteristics strength of the materials.
Q4: What are the factors to be considered in determining fire resistance?
A4: Aggregates, cover to main reinforcement, additional protection, floor thickness, width of beams, distinction between ribs and beams, beams and floors, columns need to be considered in determining fire resistance.
Q5: What is a fuselage?
A5: It is the aircraft’s principal structural unit. It is designed to accommodate the crew, passengers, cargo, instruments and other essential equipment.
Q6: What is included in Load Analysis?
A6: Required load analyses include
1. Maneuver loads analysis
2.Gust loads analysis (static and dynamic approaches)
3. Landing loads analysis (including both rigid airframe and dynamic analyses)
4. Ground handling loads (including both rigid and elastic aircraft characteristics)
5.Control surface reversal characteristics and load distributions
6. Dynamic analyses for control surface oscillatory conditions due to autopilot or yaw
7. Flutter analysis and tests including both wind tunnel and flight testing. This is to verify adequacy of damping characteristics of the aircraft throughout the speed range
After looking at the demands of analyses, one can make extremely important observation. A designer must consider a lot of load cases while designing a structure. Tens or hundreds of loading analysis needs to be measured for a typical aircraft structure.
